Slain Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo’s parting words before he was shot inside his compound on March 4 in Pamplona town was to help the people and his constituents.
“Tabang…ang mga taw… (Help…the people),” Degamo reportedly said in an Inquirer report.
Board Member Nyrth Degamo, the nephew of the governor, said that he was inside his car when the attack happened to his uncle.
“’Tabang, ang mga taw… (Help…the people…),’ were my uncle’s last words,” said Nyrth.
Nyrth recalled that he immediately rushed to the compound and saw his uncle’s driver shouting that Degamo was shot.
He also saw Degamo lying on the floor with a pool of blood and was already unconscious.
They immediately brought Degamo to the nearest hospital but later on declared dead on arrival despite attempts to revive him.
The family of Degamo seeks justice over the gruesome death of the governor. They also fear for their safety and worry that they will be killed next.
“He had been doing this every Saturday despite the advice of his security team that it was not safe. But the governor insisted on it,” Carlo Degamo, the governor’s son, said.
Carlo also revealed that his father had death threats in the past but insisted on meeting his constituents every weekend.
“If we looked at the CCTV, one suspect was just standing holding a firearm. He appeared to be looking for the governor. When the gunman saw him, they shot the security guard first, causing panic among the people inside,” he said.
