Marcos orders creation of advisory board to address seafarers’ concerns

President Bongbong Marcos has ordered the creation of an advisory board to address the concerns of Filipino seafarers in complying with the standards of the European Union.

Marcos met with various maritime employers and shipowners in Belgium to discuss the plight of Filipino workers in the seafaring industry.

The advisory body will be composed of officials from government agencies, international shipowners, and other stakeholders. “Although we recognize that in the last many years, the Philippines has done very well in terms of being the leading seafarers around the world… with the changing situation after the pandemic, with the changing situation especially when we talk about supply line problems, all of these areas have to be revisited,” Marcos said in a statement released by Malacañang.

“That comes with the training, changes in the curriculum, all of these things have to be ascertained,” he added.

The Department of Migrant Workers’ Susan Ople said that there is a provision under the law allowing the creation of an advisory board. Malacañang said that the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) earlier flagged the Philippines for deficiencies in seafarer training and education.

Thousands of seafarers may lose their jobs if the Philippines fails to comply with EMSA’s audit.
