Young Filipinos comprise 52 percent of registered voters – COMELEC

As many as 52% of the total registered voters for the 2022 polls are young Filipinos.

James Jimenez, Director of the Commission on Elections (Comelec), said that the young voters would make a big difference in next year’s national elections.

Jimenez said as of July, 60.46 million Filipinos are already registered for the 2022 general elections which is higher than Comelec’s target of 59 million.

Out of them, 31.41 million voters are in the age group of 18-40 years old.

Jimenez said despite the pandemic the poll body expects to record more registered voters for the coming elections. In the year 2019, the number of registered voters was 61,843,771.

He said that the voter numbers keep growing and a massive registration was going on right now and the Comelec has been processing over 25,000 registrations per day.

Jimenez hoped the pandemic task force would consider election as essential activity so Filipinos could smoothly go to their “polling precinct regardless of quarantine status.” (AW)
