The physical return of students to schools in large numbers in the UAE has resulted in frequent traffic jams with experts advising that this can be avoided if parents use buses to send children to schools.
Tailbacks have been reported near schools as parents drop or pick their children in vehicles.

Dubai’s Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management has announced that schools will return to in-person learning from October 3 which could result in a big increase in traffic.
Manager of school operations, GEMS Wellington Academy – Silicon Oasis, Alison Baldwin, said that the problem can be overcome by using school buses. Alison said that the percentage of students travelling by school bus was still lower leading to a higher number of cars on the roads
Families have also adopted carpooling with friends and neighbors due to the pandemic leading to a higher number of journeys.

Nav Iqbal, principal/CEO, GEMS Metropole School – The Villa, said schools can also consider staggered starts. Iqbal said that there was a need to “carefully understand the root causes of any congestion, so that suitable solutions can be found.”
Sangita Chima, principal of Amity School in Dubai, said that a difference in timings helps to reduce congestion during peak traffic hours.
Sangita said that they commence school at 7:30 am while other schools start at 7:40 am while multiple “entry/exit gates for students” are also used “who come by their own transport.” (AW)
